The Parish Nurse Ministries of NY, Inc., a NYS Non-For-Profit organization, is governed by an Executive Board. The Executive Board/Board of Directors is elected by the members during the annual meeting each June. The Executive Board members are in good standing within the organization and have completed the Foundations of Faith Community Nursing course.

Background
Sherry specializes in community-based gerontology, long-term care, palliative care, health behavior change, and spiritual care of individuals and families. She has widely published and presented in her areas of research, including as co-author of three recent articles about Faith Community Nursing. Sherry completed the Foundations of Faith Community Nursing course in 2015 through the PNMNY. She served as Co-President of PNMNY for two previous years, as well as Secretary for several terms. Sherry recently retired as the FCN at Orchard Park Presbyterian Church, Orchard Park, NY, where she was also the staff liaison to the OPPC Health Ministry Team and coordinated a monthly social day respite program for persons living with Alzheimer’s or other dementias. Sherry is a certified Powerful Tools for Caregivers Leader. She is also a Respecting Choices – First Steps ACP Certified Instructor/Facilitator, an evidence-based system for person-centered decision-making related to advanced care planning. Sherry is a reviewer for several peer-reviewed nursing journals. She is also Emerita faculty at the University at Buffalo, School of Nursing.

Sherry received her B.S. degree in nursing from Alfred University (Alfred, NY), her M.S. in community health nursing from the University of Rochester (Rochester, NY), and her Ph.D. in nursing with a major in gerontology and cognate minors in sociology and exercise science from the University of Missouri, Columbia (Columbia, MO).


Yvonne Askew, RN

Background
Yvonne has been involved in direct patient care in a variety of specializations for over thirty years, including ICU (Trauma, Cardio-Thoracic, and Burn).  She is now coordinator of the Faith Community Nursing Program for Catholic Health – Buffalo, with the responsibility of leading Catholic Health’s initiative to assist any interested, established, faith denomination/organization in the process of building a health ministry, that is reflective of their practices and beliefs. She was the lead research investigator and co-author of three articles, elevating the practice of Faith Community Nursing.

Yvonne received her Board Certification, by portfolio, in Faith Community Nursing in 2017 and is a member of the American Nurses Association, Sigma-Theta Thai Nursing Honor Society, the Parish Nurse Ministries of NY, Inc., N.E.W.S. Task Force– where she serves on their Board of Directors and as treasurer, Urban Christian Ministries, where she is their summer resident camp- Camp Nurse, and is a faculty member of Westberg Institute for Faith Community Nursing. Additionally, for the Parish Nurse Ministries of NY, Inc., Yvonne has served as resource room coordinator, two-term past president, and now serves as lead FCN educator for our “Foundations of Faith Community Nursing” curriculum.

Maryetta has 45 years plus experience in Professional Nursing in the areas of:
Team Leader/head nurse on acute medical and lockup wards; worked coronary care units, long term care, home healthcare; supervised college health services; and after retirement, supervised Home Personal Care Aides; worked part-time in occupational health; and more recently as an RN Investigator for Contact Tracers and Covid-19 Pediatric RN Vaccinator-both for the NYSDOH Covid-19 Project. Maryetta has served as PNMNY, Inc. Secretary 2019-2020, Volunteer Secretary 2021-2022, Treasurer 2022-2023 and Executive Board Member each of these years.

Background & Education
I received my Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences and Master of Science in Health Science Education.  I worked at Planned Parenthood in patient education, volunteered for the American Red Cross as a health educator, and taught at Genesee Community College for ten years in the health/physical education department. My husband Bill and I have three adopted miniature dachshunds, and my passion is cooking and gardening.

 I graduated from BOCES with my Practical Nursing certificate, LPN; and returned to SUNY Brockport to earn my Bachelor of Science in Nursing. My approach in nursing is holistic, to bridge faith and health. I recently became a Faith Community Nurse (FCN).

Professional
Currently, I serve as a Faith Community Nurse and Deacon with the Episcopal Church of Buffalo WNY Diocese; within the Genesee Initiative Project (GIP). GIP includes eight churches.  My past ministries include a spiritual reflection group for the inmates during the 2020 pandemic, the Blessing Box in 2021 (food pantry), and several retreats.
